March Wrap Up

4/2/2018

We are officially a quarter of the way through 2018 -- which is crazy! Unlike February, March felt like it lasted for ever. I was definitely ready to reach the end of the month and jump into April. I'm really excited for all the books I'm going to be posting about in April (some of them I've been waiting for forever), but I also wanted to take a second to do a quick wrap-up of all the books I've reviewed in March. If you didn't see the original reviews, here are quick summaries and links to the full review!

1. A Darkness Absolute
4/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 5, 2018

The second book in the Rockton series, we are dropped back into the hidden town in the Yukon with a new mystery to solve. I like where Armstrong is moving the storyline in each book and the character development that we're seeing. I'm also really interested to figure out some of the "big" secrets that Rockton is hiding and really want to know if all of these characters are going to make it to the end of the series (Armstrong never has a problem killing off characters).

2. Daughter of the Siren Queen
4/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 8, 2018

After the explosive and tense ending of DotPK, we are brought right back into the story to find out what happens next for Alosa and her pirate crew. Overall, this was a fun story. It's an easy read and I thought it was better in general then the first book in the duology. The characters and conflict felt more real and I loved seeing the character and relationship development in Siren Queen. This book was a great way to end the series.

3. Restore Me
2.5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 12, 2018

This book was a really big letdown for me; I didn't feel that we were given the same strong characters that we had fallen in love with in the previous series. Although the addition of POV changes between Juliette and Warner definitely added a nice element, it was a really big struggle to find this book. Juliette has been very diminished in this book, but I'm hopeful that we'll see her courage and strength come back in the sequel.

4. Tempests and Slaughter
3.5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 15, 2018

This book got a bit of a mixed review from me; while it was felt way too long, we were introduced to some wonderful characters that I can't wait to read more about. If you've ever read a Tamora Pierce book set in the Tortall universe, you definitely need to read this book. It's the first of a trilogy, and I have a feeling we are going to be meeting many of our favourite characters again...but from Arram (*Numair's) perspective.

5. This Fallen Prey

3.5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 19, 2018

Back to the Rockton series, this book was a bit more jumbled then previous ones. While it was still entertaining, the storyline was very convoluted and a bit overwhelming. I'm really happy to see Casey, Eric, and other Rockton favourites again, this seemed like a "middle" book, meaning it had a lot of ground to cover before the last book in the series could come out. Regardless, I liked the cliffhanger that we were left with -- what will happen next in the Rockton series and who are the real "villains" of this story?

6. To Kill A Kingdom (favourite book this month!)
5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 22, 2018

This book really grabbed me and I had such a fun time reading it. I believe this is a stand-a-lone novel, which actually stinks because I'd love to read more about these characters. Lira and Elian were excellent characters and wonderful counterparts to read POVs from. There was a definite ending to To Kill A Kingdom but there are also a lot more adventures that could be had and I've love to be along for the ride! Maybe Christo will surprise us with another book (or even a novella!) in the future? Keeping my fingers crossed!

7. The Darkest Minds Trilogy (favourite series!)
5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 26, 2018

I flew through this series; everything about these books just drew me in completely and I needed to know what happened next. I read this series for the first time about two years ago and have reread it countless times since. I hold it as one of the series that reignited my love of YA fiction and one of the reasons I first started thinking of starting a bookstagram/book review account. Like Leigh Bardugo and Rainbow Rowell, Alexandra Bracken is one of my favourite YA authors currently writing and I will read anything she publishes. I adored this series and highly recommend it!

8. The False Prince

3.5/5 *  | Full Review and Summary | March 29, 2018

Overall, this was an easy and fun read. I think the best part for me was definitely the way the story was told -- I was completely convinced that Sage was nothing more then an orphan and was completely stunned to find the truth. I'm looking forward to what happens next to him and his friends!
